A cylindrical housing on the ceiling is easy to mistake for a finished surface spotlight. On Modular Lighting Instruments’ Smart Tube family, that cylinder is only one half of the product. The other half is a separate Smart lamp unit that drops into the tube.
That split is what a smart surface tubed modular configuration is about: the tube sets the mount, length and often the driver, while Kup, Lotis or Cake set the visible optic and beam behaviour. Ordering a black or white cylinder alone does not specify the light.
For how surface-mounted fixtures sit against recessed cutouts in general ceiling work, see Surface Mounted vs Recessed Downlights. This page stays on Modular’s tube-plus-module system and the ways those parts are combined.

📦 1. What Is Modular Smart Tube Surface Lighting?
Smart Tube Surface is a surface-mounted cylindrical housing that must be completed with a matching Smart spotlight. It is not a one-piece sealed downlight.
What is the Smart Tube Surface system?
Modular presents Smart Tube as a modular architectural collection built around a refined cylindrical form. The surface version mounts directly on the ceiling and is offered in small, large and extra-large lengths so several tubes can share one visual language on a soffit.
The manufacturer’s Smart Tube Surface product page states that the housing is not a complete product. A Smart Tube housing and a Smart spotlight are both required. In practice that means two order lines: the tube (and its driver option where the sheet includes one) plus the lamp unit design you want to see from the room.
Catalogue and story pages often use Smart Tube Surface. Installation and some North American accessory strings also use Smart Surface Tubed (for example “Smart Surface Tubed 3.2” backplates, or “Smart surface tubed 115” install sheets). Treat those as Modular naming variants for the same tube-plus-module idea, not as proof of two unrelated systems. Always match the exact code on the sheet you are buying.
How is the Smart Tube Surface designed?
The outer part is an aluminium cylindrical housing, available in different finishes depending on the product configuration. Internally it accepts a Smart lamp unit. On the Smart Tubed 82 tender text, the spot sits in the tube on leaf springs, and mains or driver connection sits in a rear compartment so screws and wires stay out of view after install.
The optic you see—curve, slope or sharp rim—belongs to the lamp unit, not to a painted tip on a fixed cylinder. Change the module and the same tube diameter can read as a different fixture family while the housing language stays consistent.
What makes it different from a conventional surface-mounted spotlight?
A conventional surface cylinder usually ships as one sealed luminaire: housing, LED and optic are fixed together. Smart Tube Surface is sold as a System. You pick a diameter family, a tube length and driver option, then a Smart design (fixed or adjustable) that the sheet lists as compatible.
That flexibility is useful for distributors and brands who want one ceiling language with several beam and trim looks. It also means a generic “ø80 surface spot” description is not enough for a bill of materials. The tube code and the lamp-unit code both have to appear.
Kommerziell LED-Einbaustrahler cover many surface and recessed forms. This Modular system is specifically the combination of a named tube housing with a Smart module, not every cylinder on a ceiling.
🎯 Is Smart Tube Surface a complete light?
No. Modular states the tube needs a matching Smart spotlight; housing and lamp unit are ordered as a pair.

🧩 2. Which Smart Lighting Modules Can Be Combined with Smart Tube Surface?
Kup, Lotis and Cake are the three Smart designs Modular pairs with Smart Tube Surface. Each changes the visible trim and aperture; compatibility still follows the diameter sheet, not the nickname alone.
Modular’s Smart Tube story describes three design languages: the friendly curve of Lotis, the inviting slope of Cake, and the characteristic edge of Kup. Fixed and adjustable versions, sizes, light effects and finishes sit under those names. US Tube Surface 3.2 sheets repeat the same invitation: try all three designs with the tube cylinder in black or white structure and several brushed lamp finishes.
How the three designs compare on one tube family
The figures below come from Modular’s US specification sheets for Smart Kup, Lotis and Cake on Tube Surface 3.2 (for example the Smart Kup Tube Surface 3.2 PDF). They illustrate how the three optics differ on the same ~3.2 in tube family. Do not copy these apertures onto Ø48 or Ø115 sheets without checking those sheets.
| Artikel | Smart Kup 3.2 | Smart Lotis 3.2 | Smart Cake 3.2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design cue | Sharp rim / edge | Soft curve | Bevelled slope |
| Fixed aperture (US sheet) | 3.1 in | 2.7 in | 3.2 in |
| Adjustable aperture (US sheet) | 2.3 in | 2.0 in | 2.3 in |
| Verstellbarkeit | Fixed, or 0–25° adjustable | Fixed, or 0–25° adjustable | Fixed, or 0–25° adjustable |
| Tube pairing (US sheet) | Must be combined with Tube | Must be combined with Tube | Must be combined with Tube |
Beam labels on those sheets (spot / medium / flood) and CCT options are selected on the lamp-unit ordering string. The tube string then sets length, finish and dimming. US examples use 2700 K / 3000 K / 3500 K on the lamp unit and a Tube Surface 3.2 L or XL with a 500 mA driver, 0–10 V plus ELV & Triac, about 10.5 W connected load, damp-rated for indoor use.
Compatibility rules you should not guess from the name
- On the US Tube Surface 3.2 series, Modular’s specifications explicitly list Kup, Lotis and Cake lamp units with the corresponding Tube Surface codes. The European Smart Tubed 82 series has its own product documentation and compatibility requirements.
- Smart 48 materials name Cake, Kup and Lotis within the 48 mm Smart family and a matching surface tube. That does not automatically authorise a 115 mm Kup face on a 48 tube.
- Smart Tube Surface 115 install text lists Smart 115 fixed and adjustable lamp units. It does not reprint the 3.2 aperture table. Order the Smart 115 optic the 115 tube sheet names.
- Pista Smart Surface Tubed 48 must be combined with Smart 48(+). Track adapters are not a free mix of every Smart recessed trim.
If a project needs a photo comparison of the three faces, use Modular’s current product photography for the exact diameter. Do not infer beam angles or IP ratings from the design nickname alone.
🎯 Can any Smart face go in any tube?
No. Match the lamp-unit family to the tube diameter sheet—3.2/82, 48 and 115 are ordered as separate combinations.
📏 3. What Sizes and Configurations Are Available for Smart Tube Surface?
Length (Small / Large / XL) and diameter (Ø48 / Ø82 / Ø115) are two different axes. A length option never replaces a diameter family.
Length: Small, Large and XL (86 / 130 / 190 mm)
Modular’s Smart Tube story states Smart Tube Surface in small (86 mm), large (130 mm) and extra large (190 mm). The Smart Tubed 82 surface/suspension tender uses the same three lengths for the 82 mm spotlight tube (housing listed as ø86 mm with heights 86 / 130 / 190 mm).
Those millimetre figures are tube length (height below the ceiling plane for the cylinder), not the spotlight’s optic diameter.
Driver packaging on the 82 tender is length-linked in that document:
| Length | Role on Smart Tubed 82 tender |
|---|---|
| Small (86 mm) | GU10 retrofit or COB with remote Treiber |
| Large (130 mm) | COB with non-dim integrated driver, or driver-excluded |
| Extra large (190 mm) | COB with integrated trailing edge, 1–10 V, push-dim or DALI, or driver-excluded |
US NA Tube Surface 3.2 sheets published for this research list L and XL tubes with the driver inside the tube (120–277 VAC, 0–10 V + ELV & Triac). Do not assume the US list reprints every EU Small/Large/XL driver matrix without checking the regional PDF you are ordering from.
Diameter: Ø48, Ø82 and Ø115 series
| Smart Spotlight Diameter Series | What the official materials describe | Module / tube pairing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ø48 | Smart 48 spotlights (~48 mm outer diameter) with a dedicated surface tube (Smart 48 tender lists tube ~ø52 × 72 mm). Product pages: Smart Tube Surface 48. | Smart 48 / Smart 48(+) designs (Cake, Kup, Lotis named on the 48 tender). Constant-current driver required on DE (driver excluded) tube pages. |
| Ø82 class | Tube for spotlights with 82 mm outer diameter (Smart Tubed 82 tender). US sheets brand the matching cylinder as Tube Surface 3.2. | Kup / Lotis / Cake 3.2 lamp units on US sheets; EU 82 tube with Smart 82-class spots per that tender. |
| Ø115 | Smart Tube Surface 115 product pages and “Smart surface tubed 115” install sheet. | Install sheet lists compatible fixtures as Smart 115 fixed / adjustable LED GE — Modular’s GE (gear excluded) lamp-unit naming (LED gear not in the spotlight; the GI tube supplies the driver when that SKU is used). Published tube SKUs also include DE (driver excluded), trailing edge, 1–10 V / push-dim and DALI options at 500 mA. |
Do not merge the axes. Saying “190 mm” does not tell you whether the spot is 48, 82 or 115. Saying “Ø82” does not tell you whether the cylinder is Small, Large or XL.
Lighting and control options
Control lives on the tube / driver line for driver-included versions, while CCT, glass and beam sit on the lamp unit line.
Examples already published by Modular (not a universal matrix for every region):
- EU Smart Tubed 82 XL: trailing edge, 1–10 V, push-dim or DALI when the driver is integrated.
- EU Smart Tube Surface 115 GI sheets: 1–10 V, DALI, push-dim (single channel) and mains dimming wiring diagrams; 500 mA.
- US Tube Surface 3.2 L/XL: 0–10 V with ELV & Triac; ELV/Triac noted at 120 VAC only on the sheet footnotes.
- Smart 48 / Tube Surface 48 DE (driver excluded) pages: a constant-current driver is required; wiring still follows the diagram for that SKU, not a single house rule for every DE product.
Power, lumen output and exact CCT availability change with the lamp-unit code. Publish project photometry from the combination you ordered. Do not paste one series’ wattage onto another diameter.
🎯 Are 190 mm and Ø115 the same size?
No. 86/130/190 mm are tube lengths; Ø48/Ø82/Ø115 are diameter families. Specify both from the matching sheet.
🔌 4. What Is the Difference Between Smart Tube Surface, Suspension and Track Versions?
Surface mounts the cylinder on the ceiling. Suspension hangs it. Pista Smart Surface Tubed 48 hangs the Smart 48 look on a 48 V track adapter. Power and fixing are not interchangeable.
Smart Tube Surface
Ceiling surface mount. The tube screws to the ceiling; connection is in the rear compartment. On Smart Tubed 82, the tender describes direct fixing with chipboard screws (max. ø5 mm, not included) and no visible screws or wires after installation. This is the independent cylinder the story page calls Smart Tube Surface.
Smart Tube Suspension
The same collection extended off the ceiling plane. The 82 tender lists a galvanised ceiling bracket, textile cable, aluminium ceiling housing and a 2 m feed cord for the suspended version. Electrically you still follow the driver-included or driver-excluded string for that length. Visually the cylinder reads as a pendant tube rather than a flush surface can.
Smart Surface Tubed for Pista 48V track
Modular’s Pista materials list SMART SURFACE TUBED 48 (1× and 2×) and SMART TUBED SUSPENSION 48 as track modules. They must be combined with Smart 48(+). Published notes say they are not compatible with the upper track of an up/down profile and cannot sit where a power feed or electrical connection is mounted. Control options on those catalogue lines include 1–10 V and DALI.
That is a 48 V track configuration, not a mains surface cylinder with a different paint. The track profile, feed and driver family come from the Pista 48 V system datasheets. For general low-voltage versus mains track planning outside this brand, see commercial LED-Schienenleuchten as a product-family reference only—not as a substitute for Modular’s Pista sheet.
| Vergleich | Aufputz | Suspension | Pista 48V Smart Surface Tubed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installation | Surface-mounted on ceiling | Suspended below ceiling | Track-mounted on Pista 48 V |
| Mounting structure | Ceiling-mounted tube | Suspension cable + ceiling housing (82 tender) | Track adapter on 48 V rail |
| Power connection | Driver configuration depends on the specific tube SKU | Driver configuration depends on the specific tube SKU | 48 V track system; Smart 48(+) required |
| Main distinction | Direct ceiling cylinder | Pendant cylinder | Track-based Smart 48 tubed module |
🎯 Is the Pista tubed module just a Surface tube on a clip?
No. It is a 48 V track SKU for Smart 48(+), with its own feed and placement limits on the rail.
Abschluss
Smart surface tubed modular lighting, in Modular’s sense, is a configurable system: a cylindrical housing plus a Smart lamp unit, not a sealed one-piece surface spot.
Kup, Lotis and Cake change the face and aperture on the diameter family the sheet allows. Length options (86 / 130 / 190 mm) and diameter series (Ø48 / Ø82 / Ø115) answer different questions and must both be specified. Surface, Suspension and Pista 48 V versions change how the same design language is fixed and powered.
